Isn't the idea of an artificat that it's a really rare ego item that's 
unique enough to get a "name"?

Artifacts should be better then ego items (of equivalent level), otherwise 
they just don't make much sense.  In normal history, an ego item that is 
better then an artifact would supplant the artifact.  The old artifact would 
get tossed in a chest or given away, the new ego item would eventually be 
given a name... becoming an artifact.
