I try to make it fun for everybody. Making game easier doesn't make it more fun. In fact I think new players should _not_ be able to win _at all_. It _should_ take a veteran to actually win this game.

But that might be just me.

Making the game too hard only makes it tedious, not fun.

That depends how you implement "hard". Too hard would, of course, be too hard. That is not what I'm wanting.

For example:
By moving RoPoison resist to 4000' you make game harder and boring. By removing poison _resist_ entirely would remove that boring part. There would be no point of scumming for resist poison if it doesn't exist, but it would definitely make game harder.

Bad example, but you get the point.

There's a
certain middle ground difficulty which is "just right" for most
people, and I believe V is currently there.

Close, but not quite there. Very close.

and, in fact, judging from
the response, seems to be contrary to what others want...

Actually I don't see many veterans saying anything against my point. Only newbies or at least pseudonyms I don't regocnize. And of course JLE whose work I'm criticising.
Been playing and posting in the newsgroup off and on for around 7
years now. Since Ben's days.

OK. I just didn't regocnize you.

I think JLE is taking this a little bit too personally. He did a overall great job, especially with monsters. Too many item changes is what I'm complaining against. With small changes game gets much better than it was at 2.9.3. GW-angband mage spell list is also good, but it needs some work too to fit in current vanilla (rift being too powerful etc.).

Well, you directly insulted his experience with the game. How couldn't he take that personally?

I didn't mean it to be insult. I was just wondering if he didn't have enough playing experience. Many game maintainers have openly said that they are lousy players. I was wondering if this is true for Jonathan too.
