A clarification, here--I use a newsreader which displays Subject: lines,
but which also displays all posts in chronological (by server receiving)
order. Posts are numbered, and it is possible to jump to specific posts
by number and follow a thread (based on Subject: line alone, not what
responded to what). There are three options for marking posts read:
(1) Read the bleeking thing. This can involve opening it, seeing that the
first screen of text is uninteresting (or warns of a spoiler I do not wish
to read), and skipping to the next post in the thread (by Subject: line).
(2) 'Z'ap a thread--marks all unread posts with the same Subject: line as
the post I am currently at as read. Given the sterling signal:noise ratio
on r.g.r.a., I really don't like the option.
(3) Mark everything (not every post with the same Subject: line,
*everything*) which the server received before the post I am currently
reading as read. Kludgy and not good for much except playing catch-up.
Love and coffee,
Frances
