This is the big clue here - the friend he's been playing against will know
which game he's playing, which armies and models he liked the look of, and
so on, so the best approach might be to go and interrogate him for info,
having sworn him to secrecy, of course! :-)

In a later post you mentioned he was playing Warhammer 40K. This does pose a
slight problem, as the current 40K rulebook is due for an update sometime
next year, GW haven't said anything officially (IIRC), but its pretty much
an open secret that a new updated version of the game will be released next
autumn. As well as this, the currently available rulebook (3rd Edition) has
had certain sections revised in attempts to improve the game, and these
updates are in various magazines, books and websites.
With this in mind, it might not be such a good plan to buy him the current
rule set when it will become outdated within a year. It might be better to
get him other things he'll need - figures, paints, glue, brushes and so on -
for now, if he's playing with friends who already have their own copies of
the rules then he can get by without his own book for now.
On the other hand, if you don't mind handing over £25 for a 3rd Ed rulebook
that will be out of date within the year, it will help him out when he's
learning the game to have his own copy, and I expect from all I've heard
that there will be some continuity between the current edition and the next
version (more so than there was between the 2nd and 3rd Edition, anyway), so
the transition will not
Hmm, that's probably not helped much, just made it less clear what the best
course of action will be. Might be best if you ignore me. :-)
