Its a dark blue, but the dyes the French had were bad and tended to fade quickly, so a medium would also do. In Spain, they could not even get the cloth through, so patches were any color, and some unit were basically in homespun brown. Also wore white or grey cloth hat covers (Watch Sharpe) At one time Napoleon tried to clothe the army in the Old white coats, but ran out of dye. So for several years about 15 regiments were in white.
