At it's most basic you'd have a primary thruster with several maneuvering thrusters. The main thruster could be triggered by, for instance, the space bar, and wasd could function to fire the maneuvering thrusters. More complex designs could incorporate more venting options for the primary thrust, in which case I think that either using the shift key to toggle between a primary and a maneuvering action (relative to the wasd keys), or perhaps a right click and drag option to fire the maneuvering thrusters, would work well. In any case, I'm just sayin' that you shouldn't necessarily tie yourself to one flight model or control scheme since it can, and should vary with the gear involved.
