Hi folks, right! I'm hunting for the correct Unicode codes for the Mah Jong-related kanji, and I'm a little muddled with 'orchid' and would kindly appreciate some clarification. According to the document of Mah Jong characters in Unicode font that Tom Sloper kindly e-mailed me a good while ago the character for the Orchid 'season/flower' is U+6B04. This can be seen at http://www.unicode.org/cgi-bin/GetUnihanData.pl?codepoint=6B04. This page says it has the Mandarin 'LAN2', and the definition "railing, balustrade; animal pan". But this doesn't seem to tally with the character on the orchid tile shown in either Millington's or Lo's books. The other characters for Plums, Chrysanthemum and Bamboo all match up, as do the seasons, spring, summer, autumn (fall) and winter. I've also discovered that U+5170 (http://www.unicode.org/cgi-bin/GetUnihanData.pl?codepoint=5170) is Mandarin 'LAN2' and is given the definition "orchid; elegant, graceful". But neither does this match with the Millington tile image. Looking up the Chinese Glossary at the back of Millington reads: 6721 lan2 (C.H. lan; H. lau; F. loa, lau; N. laan; J.ran) 'a general term for orchidaceous plants - "orchid"'. Any guidance (so long as it's correct!) and clarification would be gratefully accepted. Thanks. Gareth J M Saunders Edinburgh, UK
