Thanks everyone for your replies.

So according to your answers, I did it right, and the rules are quite 
realistic. I guess if I don't like the outcome of the effective skill 
the way it did, I have to come up with some house rule for this.

I like the approach of Mark Langsdorf, above. I think I will give it a try.
