Just be sure to look out for motivation problems. 

In the group where I play we seldom use the "sign up" method, we just
meet in some pretty random manner here and there. As we the players
are somewhat chaotic of nature, our PCs seldom have the same goals
when we set out. Hence, after the first initial task, there is always
a huge row about what to do next. Sure, the DM seems to hint at new
adventures, but it never happens that everybody is interested.
Starting an Inn is an often mentioned alternative. 

This surely differs greatly from one group of players to another.

What kind of campaign do you want to DM - and what kind do the players
want to play? If you give some words on this, it would maybe be easier
to say something spesific.
