On campaign design, I used to chose general design for interesting play, but rarely messed with events in-game for such, whereas I'm far more willing to do so these days. I suspect a lot of it came down to the fact running and designing simulationist was a lot more work, and in the end, wasn't appreciated any more by my players (perhaps less) than the way I'm doing it now.
