Deck sizes

I understand that a "standard" deck of playing cards of the type prevalent 
in the US contains no more than 55 cards. From perusal of consimworld, I 
notice that GMT recommends would-be designers think in multiples of 55 
cards.

What about the itsy-bitsy cards found in many German games, Settlers of 
Catan for example? What's the standard number there?
