Remember, your goal is to sell your game and make money. I would trust
the distributor. They are experts in such things.

I do prefer the smaller box as it allows me to carry more games with
me...however, I do always have the option of transferring the game
components to a smaller box, if those components allow for it.

No. However, I am not among the 'first-adopters' when it comes to board
games...I will generally only buy a game after having played it...in
which case, the size of the box is irrelevent as to this specific issue.

Of course. They are bigger and take up a higher percentage of my visual
field...as such, are more noticable.
