This topic always comes up every once in a while.  I'm fairly certain it's
impossible to kill him in U1, U2, U4, and U5.  In some early versions of U6
it is possible to push him (or any other character, for that matter) into
an open chest, where he will become an item just like any other. 
Apparently he's got the same properties as a glass, since if you drop him
too far away he shatters.  Needless to say, this was a bug and not an
Easter egg, and was fixed in later versions of the game.

There are conflicting reports as to whether it's possible to kill Blackthorn
in U5.  Some people swear a certain method, such as murdering him in his
sleep, works, while others claim the very same thing fails for them. 
Perhaps it's dependent on the version of the game you're running.

Personally, I am more interested in learning whether it's possible to kill
Zipactriotl or the shaman in Savage Empire.
