For what it's worth, I've recently become quite a devotee of FICS. Started using Winboard as a client, but have recently gotten to like Thief 1.1. There's plenty of competition for my level of play (FICS rating ~1600 Standard), and you can't beat the price on any of this stuff. Add in Crafty for analyzing my blunders, and it's a pretty good setup. (Although I did send my wife a link to Fritz 8 as a Christmas hint!)
