The problem with this approach is that if you take it to its extreme
you would *never* pre-empt. Whatever the standard of your pre-empts you
can always catch partner with the wrong hand.
Pre-empts are a gamble of loss v gain. Much of the time it is a
question of the players' temperaments where they are on the spectrum.
For example, what would you open 1st in hand at Green [nv v v] with
xxx
QJT9
xx
xxxx ?
Playing with Ron Higgins I would open 2H, as would he. Of course it
is a gamble, but it is our style, and we allow for partner to do so.
playing with Peter Clinch - as I did in New Orleans - I would need
another small heart.
