Sven, would you let Ed play in your club with the novices and Flight C
players with this attitude? Would you have a talk with him about it? What
would you do if he kept calling the director for these minute infractions?
Who cares? It is not going to happen.
I repeat, calling the director will run developing players away from the
game about as fast as anything I can think of. If it is necessary, it must
be done very gently and friendly.
Pray tell, who suggested otherwise? Only you. Ed, I, and most other
people here call the TD to sort out situations: you don't: you call him
"on" a player. Sure, I expect your TD calls would upset opponents: mine
never have, and I bet Ed's don't.
It takes a while to develop a think bridge
skin and not take director calls personally. I have long thought that bridge
manners and director calls ought to be including in teaching. It isn't here,
people are scared to death to turn off these new players. Our record for
keeping new players is horrible and when there is a follow-up, the
overwhelming cause stated by the newbie is player rudeness.
Exactly - you think calling the TD equates to player rudeness: I know
it does not, and so do my opponents.
I know this is
hard for Ed to believe but these folks took up the game to have FUN. Having
the law called on you is far from fun.
True, which is why we do not do it.
Some clubs here (Alan LeBendig's is one) have rules against calling the
director on novices for some infractions. Hesitations is one of them, nit
picking minor rules violations would be another. However, I am sure if the
problem was relayed to the director, he would sit down with these folks in
private and explain what was expected of them.
Eternal novices help pay for the game for the rest of us. Without them, our
fees go and more and more clubs die.
Other players also pay fees.
