The problem probably is with your browser. I use Firebird for my browser ( child of Mozilla ) and have problems on some websites including my broker. Firebird and Mozilla are designed stricktly in accordance with internet standards and that causes them to fail on many web pages because they are primarily designed to look good in Internet Explorer which is not standards compliant. So web designers deliberately design non standards compliant web sites for the most common browser.
And then to top off the problems of web sites not designed according to standards, you're running a Mac which is just asking for more problems < shrug >.
Since the site works fine in Firebird I tend to believe it is set up in accordance with current standards and your browser probably is not in compliance. The site actually works fine in IE and Firebird so I strongly suspect the problem is your browser.
Well, under Mozilla, Opera and Galeon on FreeBSD I see the following problems with the layout:
It's slow to load. From a very well connected site (I work for an ISP), it's still slow.
Often pages fail to resize properly and require horizontal scrolling. Only resizing the window and reloading the page forces the display not to be horizontally scrolled.
The readers followups to articles are displayed in a font which looks to be about 1/2 the size of the article text, meaning I have to change my browser settings to comfortably read the responses.
I also feel that requiring Flash support (and specific versions) for no apparent reason is a very poor idea.
I do not think you could point to this site as an example of good web design, because it isn't. There's a lot of very good content but the presentation leaves a lot to be desired.
