I don't know if this story is true, but a dealer told a story to those of us playing that the origination of "free drinks" had nothing to do with loosening gamblers into losing more or the casinos generosity.
She claimed that LV officials were not thrilled with Bugsy and the mob moving in and in an attempt to harass them they denied him a liquor license to sell booze. So instead he gave it away at his casino as that wasn't illegal and no license was required to give it away.
She swore it is true! I don't know????
I'm sure they make more in people losing their control while drunk so it is here to stay. How "free" is it really when the cw expects a $1 tip every round? I've had them REFUSE a 50c tip on a glass of coke like it was too small and not worth their collection!
The story I heard is that Benny Binion is the first to offer his guests free drinks in order to lure them into his casino.
