Presumably by saying 'they' you are referring to UK Lottery operator Camelot and the six 'Good Causes'?
The 'Good Causes' is an integral part of the Camelot operation, firmly cemented into the Lottery Statute Laws by the UK Government of 1994 and ultimately, the UK Lottery Commission.
Camelot have no choice but to spend a percentage of Lottery stake money on various UK institutions. Out of every £1 spent on the National Lottery, around 28p goes to the six Good Causes. To date, over £13 billion has been raised for the Good Causes.
I wonder which 'crackpot' causes are you referring to in particular.. is it Art? Sport? Heritage? Education? Environment? or the many UK Charities that benefit?
Let me give you just two examples of excellent awards..
A £1.8 million grant for a new state-of-the-art sports centre that opened earlier this year in Bristol's St Paul's area. Undoubtedly a great opportunity for the youth of St.Paul's to perhaps direct more of their energies into sport and less into the drug culture and crime that infests that infamous suburb of Bristol.
And on my own doorstep: a new sailing centre in Dorset offering disabled sailors excellent facilities and giving them a great opportunity to hold internatonal competitions for all disabled seafarers World-wide.
