I'd highly recommend The World's Greatest Blackjack book by Humble and Cooper. I've read through it several times and it's very entertaining and informative. The correct thing is to hit hands 12-16 if the dealer has a 7 or higher up. (Except for standing on a 12 vs a 2 or 3). Even if it seems you "always" bust in these situations, it's still the correct play. These are bad hands either way, but in the long run you will win more by hitting according to the basic strategy. The first trip I : learned blackjack the hard way - very hard way. I didn't know there were : more than one table with different minimums and got stuck at a $25 with : $1,000 in hand, which soon left that hand. I had a fellow sitting next to : me (only myself, him, and the dealer) who had won a bit and was helping me a : little and he was telling me "Don't worry, hit the count is +4" and the : likes. I didn't know what this meant until the following Monday I had : mentioned it to a friend. My second trip, I found a $10 table and bought in : for $20. I started at around 12AM and around 8AM had $700 in hand. I : cashed in, and left (after 2 hours sleep at some cheap motel - I live a few : hours away from AC). The next trip I came home with $400 positive. It : seems after those trips things have just gone down a bit. I know I'm : addicted, and can admit this. It is a bit hard to say I'm not when I find : myself draining a couple of credit cards when I run out. This is a very : very bad thing, this I know as well. :-) So I went out and purchased : "Blackjack's hidden secrets II: win without counting". I read the whole : book last night, and didn't find it as instructional/informative to the new : player as I had hoped it would be, but still a good read in my opinion. : From what I'm reading on this little card of "hit/stand/double/surrender" : and so forth, I'm told to hit on all 12's, 13's, 14's, 15's, 16's if the : dealer has a high card showing. I can see some logic in this as the dealer : either has another high card and I'm more than likely going to bust anyway : so I might as well take the chance, but it seems every time for example if I : hit on a 13, 23 it is. 14, 24 - 15, 25. That's basically how it goes, so I : normally just stand. Are there any tips you could provide for a beginner to : walk away a winner with a positive bankroll? Perhaps you know of a site : that's good for beginners to start or a good book? Any information is : really appreciated. I look at it this way - if I can't stop playing, I : might as well play well. Overall I try to pay attention to how the cards : are dealing - if they're high on the two folks before me and I've got a 14, : I won't hit. Basic "strategy" such as that. : Regards, : KB
