I guess I've never had that problem. When I was in L.A., people always asked me "is this your first time" to which I replied "I'm from Indy, where I dance regularily". But, perhaps, it's different for follows? Perhaps dancing your first dance as a lead would pretty much solve your problem? (of course, I'm always the first one to ask "is it your first time", since it's rude to lead someone in fancy swings if they've never danced before -- so I need to know beforehand. So, sadly, I can't just let them assume I'm new, since otherwise, I might miss the opportunity to do cool moves.)
