Divide the amount of width that you want to add by two. On each side of the front OR back, pick up stitches along what would be the seamed edge from the bottom to the arm hole, and knit the required amount. This method will save you having to sew an extra seam when finishing, and the insert may be worked in pattern if you wish. Moss stitch is *flexible* and looks very nice when done.
