2. Theory and Practice of Goldsmithing - Granulation
The revival of granulation in our century has been accompanied by
many wrong ideas and misunderstandings, many stemming from the
incorrect notion that the secrets of a mysterious process were long
lost. To better understand granulation, we should therefore start by
examining the myths and laying them to rest....

4. The Earliest Cloisonne Enamels from Cyprus
An island in the eastern Mediterranean, with a history of more than
8000 years, Cyprus was one of the earliest producers of copper in
the world, had a flourishing metal industry and during the 'Golden
Age' of Cyprus, the island enjoyed a high level of prosperity. This
brought a great number of settlers and craftsmen from neighboring
countries....

5. Self Protection: Safety and Litigation
After writing my recent safety book something unexpected happened. I
had a number of calls from lawyers about safety issues. These guys
were suing jewelry store owners in different places in the US. The
litigation was on behalf of the store's goldsmiths, when working
conditions, storage of chemicals and so on had injured them ....

6. How jewelers approach working with their material?
This diagram shows how jewelers approach working in the field in
terms of how they relate to the material. The approaches chosen will
'filter' the results available, that is that what kind of work you do
is partly a reflection of the way you approach working with the
material. Traditionally much jewelry has been 'cut and bend'. This
diagram allows you to examine how you approach working with metal and
then perhaps gives you clues about where you might want to experiment
so as to push yourself.....

7. Roads to Recovery - Processes for refining gold jewelry scraps and
wastes
When questions arise about manufacturing quality gold jewelry,
manufacturers are eager to talk shop with their peers and industry
experts. They want to know if they are using the right alloy for a
specific application, casting at the appropriate times and
temperatures, and annealing properly when work hardening a piece.
Rarely, though, does the conversation turn to refining-an area of
jewelry manufacturing that poses more questions than answers in many
manufacturers' minds. Refining is a practice that must be done
precisely and methodically to ensure the full recovery of gold, as
well as an end product that is free of impurities, which can lead to
quality problems when the metal is reused in production....

8. Waste Not Want Not - Recovering Precious metal
When it comes to recovering precious metal, nothing is worthless.
However, if you walk into many repair shops you will find people
behaving as if it were. Many people do not realize what a valuable
asset their scrap is, and have been pleasantly surprise by the amount
of additional revenues received from a refiner when a clean
and orderly shop is maintained....

9. Aquamarine: a cyclosilicate
The region of pegmatite dikes in the state of Minas Gerais in Brazil
has been the primary source of gem beryl and several other species of
colored gemstones for many years. Rivers have cut places through the
dikes and alluvial deposits, called "cascalho", which are scattered
throughout the region. It is notable that the extensive gemstone
deposits in Minas Gerais often yield large aquamarine crystals
accompanied by all the other colored varieties of beryl. According
to....

10. Axinite: A Cyclosilicate Group
On an excursion in the Alps in 1797, mineralogist, R. J. Hauy
discovered some highly vitreous, piezio-electric wedged-shaped
crystals that resembled schorl, the dark variety of tourmaline. The
incorrect designation, 'vitreous schorl', was used even after
axinite was identified as a complicated borate silicate group of
minerals. The characteristic axe shape of its crystals gave it its
name.....

11. Royal Flush
The tables of the stones are set even with the metal surface in a
modified bezel. This is where the name 'Flush Set' derives from; as
the stones are set flush with the metal. Flush setting is an advanced
setting procedure. Precise craftsmanship must be executed
throughout the process to accomplish the desired look....

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
12. Bead Stone Setting - Beas It!
Bench Jewelers often use different methods to accomplish the same
work. I believe the end results are what is important, not the method
used to get there. In jewelry work the ends often justifies the
means. This is not more evident than in bead setting. I know jewelers
who cut the seat with round, bud, cone, setting, heart, or bearing
burs. Then they cut the excess metal away with flat, knife, or
onglette gravers, or they use heart, wheel, round, or knife edge
burs. Some even use needle files or saw blades....

13. Restoring a Jewellers Vulcanising Press
This vulcaniser came to me in a poor condition. It would not heat up
and had seized because of corrosion. The bodywork around the base was
also badly corroded and needed treatment. Having decided this would
be a worthwhile restoration, I began researching the makers and
identified them as....

14. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and other RSIs and the Jeweler
Carpal tunnel syndrome is only one of many kinds of repetitive
strain injuries (RSIs) and cumulative trauma disorders (CTDs). RSI,
CTD and 'overuse syndrome' are reasonably interchangeable in
meaning. Carpal tunnel syndrome is, however, the most....
