Twig wreaths - material?

Hi! I'm new here. Sorry if this question has been asked before...

I would like to make a rather large twig wreath to hang outside. I don't want to 
use a frame, just twigs that I would tie up together and force them into a round 
shape (that would be the frame, then I'd add more twigs to it to make it fuller). 
What type of twig do you recommend I use for this project? I have many maple, fir, 
beech, oak and birch trees all over my property and the ground is cover with 
twigs.
