Distorsion

Tried some simple mats in the book " The Complete book to knots and knot
tying" by Geoffrey Budworth: Round mat (with 5 bights and 3 leads) and Ocean
plait. I spent lots of time to make these mats symmetric. However, the
result was modest. I was wondering, what methods are available to make them
symmetric? Are there any?
