Yeah, I think the biggest difference is the size.  Check out
http://www.x10.com/ for toys that you could hook up to your computer or
otherwise easily control it.  Also, you could consider digital timers, as
the traditional ones for lights etc. don't seem to have the timing precision
that you may need.
