The interesting thing that I saw on the "shot straight up" scenario is that the bullet will come down base first. It is still spinning at an appreciable portion of the original RPMs so it is still gyro stabilized in it's original axis. With the exception of a "boat" tail (just to stay on topic) most bullets have a flat base and that is not conducive to easy flow through the air on the way down.
