A hearty second for the SOF idea! :-) SOF boats are not only light and very beautiful, they're inexpensive to build, require fewer expensive tools, and are faster to build than most other types of construction. I second the recommendation of Chris Cunningham's SOF building book as well. I have both Cunningham's and Petersen's books (both are great), and I'm planning on building my next boat from the Cunningham book (except for the skinning technique, as I want something a bit more traditional). He also includes instructions for carving paddles, and even making a kid size SOF. One thing to consider with Cunningham's skinning technique...it's not quite "traditional", in that he suggests sewing the seam along one gunwale, instead of down the center of the deck. I prefer the more traditional approach here. If you do decide to try a SOF, you can get lots of information and help at the QajaqUSA site and forum: http://www.qajaqusa.org/ This is also from that site...several building books: http://www.qajaqusa.org/Equipment/equipment.htm Whatever you decide to build, it'll be lots of fun! :-) - -- Melissa My PGP public key: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]&Body=Please%20send%20keys -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iD8DBQE/tDurKgHVMc6ouYMRArBcAJ9Oaw7+xLpp2u/60hCQn3iGCgTTRACeNaSV qCqz2/nUeDvX5KuOjcUSKPE= =Gzzk -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----
