This may be a bit extreme, but we are covered in rats here this time of year, actually had one gnaw through our seed barrel a few weeks ago (since upgraded to aluminum, try that you little rats!). Usually 2-3 on or arond the feeder anygiven time i hit it with the flashlight at night. We went to war! The great and mighty duct tape comes into play, as does one large victor rat trap.... Tape trap to feederpost (or on top of feeder in your case maybe.) Then put one carefully measured fingertipload of cheap peanut butter on trigger, and sprinkle a little birdseed on top of that. Then carefully set trap after your late feeding birds have called it a night and check it in the morning. If you got one, remove it and leave the trap sprung so you don't get any birds, If you didn't get a rat carefully spring the trap, again so you don't get any birds. (course i could care less if ours gets an occasional sparrow, but i don't want to get a cardinal as they feed first thing in the morning).
