This is also an issue in urban settings, where you dress for outdoors, but spend much time indoors wearing the same clothing. No backpack to put extra clothing into. The amount of expedition wear used in urban/suburban settings is absurd, but I suppose it keeps gear shops and certain manufacturers in business. The lowest temperature ever recorded in Central Park in NYC is -15 F, the normal daily minimum for the coldest month (Jan) is +25.3 F. A New York winter is not that cold compared to many other places north of Florida. Being near the ocean is helpful.
