China has put it self into a box on Taiwan. The US is China's meal ticket. If Taiwan votes for independance, China will have a big decision to make. Forcing the issue on Taiwan will mean the loss of its biggest customer, the US.
you have touched on a big future issue here. china has openly stated that it will invade taiwan is they declare independance. bush has stated, early in his presidency, that the usa would not allow china to do that.
The simple answer is for Taiwan to become an autonomous part of China as per Hong Kong. They can continue to do as they have always done, but on paper anyway, the island would be returned to Chinese mainland "ownership". This would allow the Chinese to save face, allow the Taiwanese their continued freedom and get the US out of a potential nuclear war situation.
Except that Hong Kong is being brought to heel. Its' freedoms are being ground down. The same would begin to happen in Taiwan. Moreover the economic capital of Taiwan would then belong to China.
OK. So let's get the nukes out. Whomever is left behind should dress warmly so as to not be adversely affected by the nuclear winter. The skiing should be nice though.
Hey! I was merely pointing up the flaws in your arguements. :-\ What you are proposing is one way for the US to lose graciously. Attempting to minimize the losses, or at least drag them out. But your optimistic spin and presenting it as Chinese saving face doesn't fly.
