'89 GTI 16v starter installation problems

I have an '89 GTI 16v that had a problem starting.  I narrowered it
down to a dirty connector on the starter solenoid but in the process
of diagnosing, I removed the starter.  I've tried to re-install the
starter, but I'm having trouble getting the bolts to line up properly.
 Can anybody provide some tips that might help me?
