That's true of any old-growth Southern Yellow Pine (which is all
that Dade County pine is, and half a hundred other names).  Even
when cut & dried properly so it's not seeping pitch it's very
hard, and has to be drilled before you can nail into it.

South Fla was settled well after the era of log cabins, tho.
Houses down here built of local pine were built of sawn lumber.
(what we'd call "cracker style" up in N Fla).  By the time the
fad for log homes came around in the 70's the S Fla building
code would not allow it (it's pretty much got to be block, brick,
or poured concrete to meet the hurricane specs).
