When you are doing fine work that requires your fingers you can remove the shell and just use the liners, when you are doing masonry or other heavy work you can use the combo or in the summer just the shells. It's a very versatile combination and certainly keeps your hands warm and cost under $20. It took years to wear out the shell and at that it only wore a small hole in two of the fingers. -- Rob
