I use Mechanix gloves for everything (under the hood to wood framing out in the shop) and agree that they are worth their weight in silver if not gold. I use the type with padding in the palms and some sort of rubber 'armor' on the knuckles and I can say that they save a ton of scrapes/cuts and even minor burns from under the hood. (They aren't asbestos so don't go grabbing the header pipes on a recently run engine). They are somewhat thin for outdoor cold weather use, but you may be able to buy a size larger than you need and then use some liners under them. I have some cotton liners for my ski gloves that work great at helping in the warmth department, but the Mechanix gloves themselves alone would be chilly for outdoors work during the winter. Otherwise, they would be perfect for your intended use.
