Hockey, or "field hockey" as it was known, has been played in England and in France for more than 500 years, in summer being played on dry land and in winter on frozen ponds and lakes. The ice version spread to Holland in the 17th century, where it was known as "Kolven", in England as "Bandy" and in Ireland as "Hurley". The earliest North American games were played in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where British soldiers stationed there were reported to have organized contests on frozen ponds in and around that city in the 1870s, and about that same time in Montreal students from McGill University began facing off against each other on a ice rink. The continent's first ice hockey league was started in Kingston, Ontario, in 1885, and it had four teams. All good things come from Europe... ;-) -- Paul-B Reply-to address is spamtrap... use paul @ streetka dot biz without the spaces
