Anyone know how the quality is on the rebuilt 12a engines that come out of
Jacksonvile Florida?
That's where my local Mazda dealer ( Toronto) says that they come from.
The two dealers i've been talking to here can't seem to agree on things..
One says the Core Charge is $500, the other says $1000, and thatthey have
to inspect the core before refunding the money. IT's a dead engine with
compression.. I don't know what they want to see that makes the Mazda
people decide that it's worth the core charge or not.
Has anyone in Toronto ordered a 12a? Is there any sort of warranty if
you install the engine yourself? I haven't asked them that one yet.
Sorry I didn't reply sooner - been fighting with my computer since
last week. :)
My first piece of advice, as always, is stay away from Mazda
dealerships. They're poorly organized, their communication with Mazda
Canada make users of carrier pigeons look like paragons of efficiency
and their mechanics/technicians typically don't know enough about the
rotary to do much more than change the spark plugs.
The first thing I would suggest doing is call around to local rotary
shops to see if anyone has a 12A available. Odds are if one's
available, it will be used. Not a rebuild. But if it has low kms
you'll most likely be ahead of the game.
1) You don't have to put up with a break-in period.
2) You won't have to wrangle with a dealership.
The first place to look for a 12A is CP Racing, which is east of
Orangeville. They have a lot of first gen experience and I haven't
heard anything negative about them. My own 7 mechanic has made trips to
their shop to work on FCs with them (and guess who did the introductions
there? :) ) CP is a partnership - Chris and Pat.

There's one shop in Toronto that I'd encourage you to avoid. A-spec.

In two years on the RX-7 Forum, and its separate Canadian section,
I've yet to hear anything other than raging complaints about these guys.
Steer clear.

That's about it for now. Lemme know if I can be of further help. :)
