'91 Fox GL engine giving off strange smell

My engine is giving off a strange smell. It doesn't smell like 
burning petroleum distillates (oil, gas, etc). The best way I can 
describe it is that it's a harsh, acrid, smell, similar to burnt 
gunpowder. I don't see any smoke from either the engine or tailpipe.
It's not noticable when I'm driving, but I smell it when I get out of
the car. In my garage, the smell is extremely strong.

I've poked around, but everything seems to be in order. Does anyone 
know what might be causing this?
