Re: Where is the speedometer cable located?

First off, don't place much faith in those road side radars.

You can try doing 60MPH and see if it take you 1 minute to from mile marker to mile marker.... but I put about as much faith in that as I do road side radars.

If you really want to know for fact, then you need to take your car to a pro who can slap the car onto one of those "road test" machines and see if the speedo matches the wheel speed. We don't have these in my area since (luckly) we don't have state inspections [ie-another wheel tax].

Does the speedometer needle ever "float" between readings. For example, if you are driving say 70-ish and keeping a steady pace with traffic, does the needle float back and forth between 60 and 70, or would it stay steady right there at 70.

If the needle stays steady right at 70 for my given example, then your sensor that is screwed into the top of the tranny is fine. I have seen where the plastic gear that is pressed onto the diff cracks and then slips, thus causing the floating needle. Only seen this on automatics.

Thanks...

That's what I wanted to find out. I took my car to a mechanic (not a
dealer) to replace a driver side mirror. Apperantly the mirrors only fold
backwards and I broke one off when I backed off between two waist high
poles. I mentioned that my speed seems to be underestimated by speedometer.
I checked it against those automatic radar displays on the highway. He said
that it might be the speedometer cable that wears out or something to that
effect. I decided to ask and see for myself before committing to a repair.
And also, I don't want to deal with the dealership mechanics if I don't have
to..........they take too long and overcharge you. Thanks for the info
again. Now I just have to find that 'sensor on top of the gear' and see if
it's OK.....

Hi,
Can anyone tell me where the speedometer cable located on the 2002

Jetta?

(posting a pic would be nice) The mechanic I went to said I needed to
replace it.

There is no cable. There is a gear that is driven off the diff, and on top of the gear is a sensor that a wiring harness plugs into.

Now then, why were you told you need a new "speedometer cable"?
