Two contemporary companies doing that are BLUE (the Blue Ball) and
Royer (the powered series). The preamp is built into the mic and puts
out a fairly hot nominal mic level (so it still needs a traditional
preamp) but what's built in removes much of the effect of the
microphone/preamp interface, which is the major contributor to why
mics sound different with different preamps.
