What you're trying do should work. The hardest part should be finding an appropriate cable that's long enough, only because considerable length might be involved. The length itself isn't a problem because the output on your PC is designed to drive long lines. However, coordinating a PC and a stereo that are some distance apart can be a bit confusing until you're used to working it.
