Sure there are differences in the musicality of the player. I don't, on the
other hand, see how the amplifier, other than tone or operating controls,
operator has any ability to change the sound being reproduced.

Only the good ones; of which there are many.

Why would anyone say that? But, now that you have, I'll bet that few 'average'
audiophiles could, in fact, reliably identify piano brands in a bias controlled
test. So what?

I know a great 'many' experienced listeners who not only don't think that amps
sound different but have proven to themselves that they do not, in spite, of
the mythology espoused by a few enthusiasts, journalists, retailers and
manufacturers. 

I'd argue that "most" experienced listeners do not think that competent
amplifiers sound different from each other. A limited forum like this with a
"high-end" label tends to draw more of the former group, but even here the
line-up is no more than 50/50.
