Re: Hornblower...spoilerish

Watched the movie tonight, and have two questions... first, as it's
been ages since I read the books (although Master and Commander has put
me in the mood again), do these movies have anything to do with the
original stories? ^_^ Some of the events are familiar, but as I said
it's been awhile. Second... they showed that suicide?! What happened to
good old fashioned off-screen death? As my father, history teacher and
Hornblower fan, would have said, "So much for showing this in class."

A little disappointing, I thought. A plot from a '70s tv spy show, with a couple of doublecrossers, both of whom were easy to identify a long while before they were exposed. A few tense armed conflict moments, resolved at the last possible moment. (The timing of the final rescue on the beach was not credible.) A few special effects. (How could anyone survive the battery explosion, least of all Wolfe?) Hornblower is a genius at sea,in warfare and in dealings with his men, but a moron when it comes to women. Marry me? Are you nuts, man?

Still, we'll be watching Duty tonight.
