Please ID British drama.

Many years ago I watched a drama on TV and I still can't forget some
of the powerful images. I'm hoping that someone may recognise the
title from the small details I can give below.

It would have been in the last 10 years or so. It concerned a young
boy around 12 years old who came from a violent household and went to
a comprehensive school. He was a bit of a cheeky chappie but suffered
tremendous abuse. In one scene he took a beating from his father
(step-father?) went to school with a bruised face the next morning.
When the kid mouthed off to his teacher in a D.T. class, the teacher
dragged him outside, punched him in the stomach, and then threatened
to tell the police that the kid was being abused at home and he would
have him moved to foster care. It was a shocking moment.

Another scene I can remember is the kid grabbing a new female
teacher's arse and then saying "Why? D'ya fancy me?" when she screamed
at him to come back as he walked away laughing with his mates. Another
scene he ran away from home with a mate "for a laugh" but they came
home. The kid was joking with his mother that it was a laugh and that
his mate had been scared of a rat. When they heard the father coming
downstairs, the mother hugged him and kissed him told him good luck.
Then his father came in and gave the kid a beating while his mother
turned away.

It was a very moving and powerful drama, I think it would have been
over a few episodes. Does anyone have any clue what it might have been
called?
