> >Are advertising dollars really well spent? well I'm 32 years old, single woman without children, medium income. I watch commercials. I have to say that very rarely do they actually make me go out and buy something specifically advertised. However when it's a new product announcement I will look it up. The only thing I think I'm really affected by when it comes to ads are fast food and cars. But only from a "I was considering them anyway and I remembered the ad and thought well maybe that would be nice" standpoint. When I was 16 my mom gave me a Consumer Reports subscription as a birthday present. (this was not a bad present... I'm the sort who actually WANTS the oil change card or the vacuum for birthdays and holidays... a fact that has caused my BF much grief since he still believes I'd be insulted after 5 years of me asking for things like a microwave, new printer, monitor etc) THAT is what is most effective in getting me to buy something. Consumer Reports and reviews on CNET. Advertising is lying... and I think that even the younger viewers are not buying into hype. With the invention of the internet, the days of the stupid consumer are over, and kids/young adults use the internet most of all. Actually the internet, while being great for stuff like this, has got to be horrible for ad people and marketing people.
