I quit watching DAYS when Matt Ashford was fired. I am disgusted how they
killed his character off; and it gets worse to read that other actors who
have been with the show for decades are fired as well -- their characters to
die gruesome deaths just to get teen viewers. Then the plan is to have
primary 20 and early 30 year old actors, translation neophytes with no
experience, but guys who look good with no shirts. No soap is committing
suicide to the degree DAYS is. I think in the end, if the soaps do not get
wise -- or should I say network executives who have no idea what soaps are,
nor what their fans want from them -- then those shows will die, and die an
ugly death with few -- if any -- fans mourning them. The soaps do not have
balanced casts, respect their history, make sure characters stay true to
their natures and histories, write character and not gimmick plot driven
stories, and go back to romance and family interaction then those shows will
not make it. In the end, I think few will follow this easy format, and many
shows will die. I think if someone does not fire JERk from DAYS and PASS NBC
definitely will be the only major network not to have a soap. I am moving
over to OLTL just because of Matt Ashford. Again, that is something TIIC do
not realize, fans like characters and couples because of the actors playing
them. Fire those actors, and hire no bodies because they are cheap, and look
good shirtless will just alienate fans; and the newbie teens they hope to
get will not make up for those long time viewers they have lost.
