Sometime ago I helped to do some remodeling in one of the theatres. At the time
we called them buffalos. Why? I don't know. I think it had something with the
fact of fooling the audience as in bewilderment and water as in water buffalos.
Anyway, two halves of a sphere filled with water and bolted together. As far as
the movement you can think of a locomotive wheel and how the driveshaft is
offset on the wheel to drive the piston. This was set so that it would rock the
two halves side to side. With the light shining through it it's very
convincing.
