I agree with everything you say about Carousel, although, since I missed
Hytner's production, I've no comment on that.
I have great respect for the hard work two young men from Chicago put into
Urinetown. They wrote a lot of jokes, and I'm only sorry that I didn't find
any of these funny. But you, and others, mention its
>serious intent
and I'm scratching my head, wondering what that could have been. A statement
about corporate power, overpopulation, conservation of resources, bladder
control? The only "message" I got out of Urinetown was that old-fashioned
musical comedy is a stupid thing, open for ridicule. That's why it's an ideal
show for those who hate musicals (more so than Rent, which literally marketed
itself to those who hate musicals) and my concern is that its fan base isn't
really interested in seeing other musicals, since the form has been so
thorougly savaged.
