It only took a few days in country for most of us to become all too
well acquainted with our own mortality, but yes, until that time, we
all "knew" we were indestructable. As one of my friends puts it, we
all know that all of us will eventually die, but we also figure than
an exception will be made in our own case.

Ear plugs/ear muffs are excellent and vital where you can use them,
but there are some very good reasons we can't use them in ground
combat. On a firing range, they not only protect one's hearing, but
can also improve scores by reducing flinching.
