OK, all valid arguments. But this one puzzles me... Is it the size of the box you object to? The bloody thing IS bigger than my DVD player, and has some features that I've never learned how to use. But apart from that, no complaints. Or is it something technical that you object to?

It's not the size of the box. It's that going digitial limits your options to watch one thing and tape another, and makes it more difficult to eve record something when you're away.

No cable box on my analog cable, and I can watch and record different things, and the only thing I have to program is my VCR.<<

I have one VCR set up so that the digital cable goes through it. That's the VCR I use to record premium channels, and channels above 99.

The other VCR is set up so that the tv is its input, so I can get regular broadcast television and basic cable recorded on that one.

The only thing you have to remember when taping digital cable is to leave the box on, and set to the proper channel.

As to how successful this is: I watch _way_ too much television, and usually take a yearly two-week vacation during which I end up taping something like thirty hours of television, and the only thing I have to ask the catsitters to handle is changing tapes. If they made ten or twelve hour VHS tapes, no one would have to even touch my setup!
